Handwoven Salawas Dhurrie Rug Craftsmanship – A Heritage of Interlock Weaving Since the 16th Century
In the heart of Salawas, our dhurrie rugs are more than just home décor—they are a legacy. For over 400 years, our village has been practicing the rare art of interlock weaving, a technique found only here. This unique craftsmanship creates rugs that are not only visually striking but also exceptionally strong and long-lasting.
Carding & Spinning by Hand
Every rug begins with raw fibers that are carefully prepared by hand.
We follow a traditional process of carding and spinning, where fibers are cleaned, aligned, and spun into yarn without the use of machines.
- 100% handmade yarn preparation
- Ensures strength and softness
- Maintains authenticity of the rug
Natural Dyeing Process
The yarn is then dyed using natural colors that we prepare ourselves using traditional methods.
- Eco-friendly and chemical-free dyes
- Earthy, long-lasting colors
- Each batch has a unique tone
This process gives every rug a natural and timeless appeal.
Interlock Weaving on Traditional Looms
Weaving is the heart of our craftsmanship. Using the rare interlock weaving technique, skilled artisans create intricate patterns on traditional looms.
- Done completely by hand
- No machines involved
- Creates a tight, durable flat weave
For a standard 8×10 ft dhurrie rug, a team of 4 artisans works together for around 30 days to complete a single piece. This dedication ensures every rug is a masterpiece.
Stone Washing Process
After weaving, each rug goes through a special tone wash process.
- Enhances the final color look
- Removes excess dye
- Adds softness and finish
This step gives the rug a refined and premium appearance.
Hand Finishing & Tassels
The final stage is all about detailing and perfection.
- Tassels are tightly hand-knotted
- Edges are carefully hand-bound
- Final quality check for durability
This ensures that every dhurrie rug is ready to use and made to last.
At Budhraj Rugs, craftsmanship is not just a process—it is a tradition that has been carefully preserved for generations. Rooted in the rich heritage of Salawas, Rajasthan, our dhurrie rugs are created using the rare and authentic interlock weaving technique, a skill that has been practiced since the 16th century. This unique method makes our rugs stronger, more durable, and visually distinctive compared to ordinary flat weaves.
Every rug begins with a hands-on approach where raw fibers are transformed into yarn through traditional carding and spinning techniques. Unlike machine-made alternatives, this process ensures that each thread carries natural strength and character. Once the yarn is prepared, it is dyed using eco-friendly natural colors that are carefully developed in-house. These dyes not only create beautiful earthy tones but also ensure long-lasting color without harming the environment.
The most crucial stage is weaving, where the true artistry of Budhraj Rugs comes to life. Skilled artisans work together on traditional looms, carefully interlocking threads to form intricate patterns. This process is time-intensive and requires exceptional precision. For example, a standard 8×10 ft dhurrie rug can take up to 30 days to complete, with a team of four artisans dedicating their expertise to a single piece. This level of dedication ensures that every rug is not just a product, but a handcrafted work of art.
After weaving, each rug undergoes a specialized tone washing process, which enhances the texture, refines the colors, and gives the rug a soft, finished feel. This step adds a subtle richness to the final appearance, making each piece look premium and ready for modern interiors.
The final stage is meticulous hand finishing. From tightly securing tassels to carefully binding edges, every detail is perfected by hand. This attention to detail ensures durability, strength, and a flawless finish that stands the test of time.
What truly sets Budhraj Rugs apart is the combination of heritage craftsmanship and modern usability. Our dhurrie rugs are not only eco-friendly and reversible but also designed to complement a wide range of interior styles—from traditional homes to contemporary spaces.
When you choose Budhraj Rugs, you are not just buying a rug—you are investing in a piece of history, supporting skilled artisans, and bringing home a product that reflects authenticity, sustainability, and timeless craftsmanship.
Weaving Techniques...
Hand-Loom
This form of weaving is very similar to textile weaving on a handloom. The warp and weft are much thicker to create a thick fabric. The rug’s yarn is passed through in between the interlocking.
Flat-Weave
A flatweave is made entirely of interlocking warp and weft threads. The colors are based on the thread, and the design is based on the different styles of interlocking.
Rug Types Comparison
| Rug Type | Manufacturing Time | Durability | Shedding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-Loom | 3-4 Months | 20+ years | Low |
| Flat-Weave | Construction Dependent (3-5 Months) | 3-10 Years | Low-Medium |
